  • Located along the Nile River- South of Ancient Egypt.
  • In between the modern cities of Aswan, Egypt and Khartoum, Sudan.
  • Capitol city was Kushite
  • Other 3 major cities were Meroe, Kerma, and Napata

Environment
  • Depended on the flooding of the Nile for good soil as it was the most important environment factor. It also provided fresh water for the people of Ancient Africa.
  • The Sahara provided people with salt
  • The area was mostly desert
  • Vegetation was plentiful near the Nile
  • Grew wheat and barley

Architecture
Ancient Africans built things like:
  • Gold mines
  • Stone temple complexes like the Lion Temple
  • Steep sided, solid pyramids
  • Statues of Gods and Kings
  • When they first began building they used mud brick and animal hide

  • Narrative tomb wall paintings
  • Unique, thin pottery with geometric patterns
  • Churches were painted

Music, Dance, and Stories
  • Enjoyed Bible stories
  • Music and dance played an important role in both their celebrations and their faith

Religion
  • Made granite and bronze statues of gods and kings to worship them.
  • Christianization first began in the 6th century AD
  • Islamic was also a type of religion worshiped by some Ancient Africans
  • They worshiped some of the same gods as Ancient Egypt
  • Mummified their dead
  • Loved stories from the bible, and after reading them, many people became Christians
